The Effects of Slum Clearance on Displaced Residents: Evidence from Victorian London
2019 CSS Fellowship

More than 800 million live in urban slums, and approximately 2 million of them are evicted every year due to slum clearance. His project investigates the effects of slum clearance on displaced residents and their children in London between 1875 and 1910. He combines original archival records from the London Metropolitan Archives and decennial census records that allows him to follow displaced residents over time. He’s findings suggest that after displacements household heads are significantly less likely to participate in the labor force, and more likely to move out of the original parish.
