Rich is Vice President for Content and Chief Journalist at SmartNe ws, an international, Tokyo-based news discovery service for mobile devices. Rich joined SmartNews from Bloomberg News, where he headed its global economic, political and economic coverage, and wrote a column on personal technology. Previously, he was a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal, where he was White House correspondent, political editor and helped create and launch The Wall Street Journal Online (WSJ.com) as its first Managing Editor.
 
Rich founded and was elected the first president of the Online News Association, an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in digital journalism. He has taught courses on the Internet and online media at Berkeley, Duke, and Columbia. His awards include Editor & Publisher’s EPPY for outstanding individual achievement in online media; Columbia’s Hearst New Media Fellowship; the White House Correspondents Association’s Aldo Beckman Memorial Award for his coverage of the Reagan presidency; and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education award for an article he wrote for Stanford Magazine.
