In the Company We Trust: Employee Political Activation following Corporate Political Activity
2024–25 Survey Lab Project
Corporate political stances have become an increasingly prominent feature of the business landscape, with potential implications for employees vis-a-vis their political behavior. Companies that take public positions on political or social issues may influence their employees' decisions to activate into politics, either by signaling ideological alignment or by creating an environment that encourages or discourages political engagement. I aim to empirically examine how corporate political stances affect employee political behaviors, investigating whether these stances lead employees to increase, decrease, or shift their political contributions to a number of sources. Additionally, I explore a potential mediating effect in which employees increase their donations to their employer's PAC to signal approval of their employer's political stance. I investigate employee-level heterogeneity in these effects. In doing so, I hope to shed light on the extent to which corporate political engagement extends beyond public messaging to influence individual political participation.
