John McMurtry is semi-retired engineer and 1983 Stanford MS Mechanical Engineering graduate after undergraduate work at UC Berkeley. He is a proud member of a family with deep roots in the Stanford community. He worked for decades in semiconductor equipment design and manufacturing, mostly with KLA Instruments Corp. For the last many years he does part-time engineering consulting with Applied Precision Design of Redwood City, and is a lifetime member of the Society of Photonic and Instrumentation Engineering. John is listed on 3 patents in the electron microscopy field, and is a former member of an Engineering Advisory Board at UC Berkeley. His wife Janet Moody and he support annual graduate fellowships in Engineering and Architecture and Environmental Design at UC Berkeley.

He is an active member of the Sequoia Union High School district, especially Menlo-Atherton High School, and is an avid bike and mountain sports enthusiast.

John is a native Californian who owes that to Stanford. His parents Burt and Deedee moved here from Houston Texas because of a Stanford work/study program that his father Burt and mother Deedee took advantage of in 1958.
