Frank Newport

Frank Newport is a Gallup Senior Scientist, and former Gallup Poll Editor in Chief (1990-2018).

Newport has been directly involved in the use of survey research to study human social behavior for over four decades. He has directed and analyzed thousands of public opinion surveys, marketing studies, and other measures of the public’s attitudes. His research has focused on political behavior, religious attitudes and behavior, inequality, and general opinion about the state of the nation.

Newport has been a major national figure analyzing and reporting on public opinion, including years of recurring reports on CNN and CNN International, podcasts and videos, and analytic studies published in leading journals and on gallup.com. He is the author or co-author of a number of books, including Polling Matters and most recently How Society Should Deal with Inequality (2026).

Newport was elected president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the nation’s largest professional organization for pollsters and survey researchers and was vice chairman of the Board of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan, and an undergraduate degree from Baylor University, from which he received the Distinguished Alumni award. Newport lives with his wife near Princeton, New Jersey.
