General Jim Mattis visits IRiSS
The IRiSS Advisory Board was honored to host General Jim Mattis - the 26th U.S. Secretary of Defense - at the Institute for a discussion on the importance of social science research, grand strategy, and leadership.
Gen. Mattis commented that the need for evidence-based research to inform policy was as important as ever, and was pleased to see IRiSS's support for scholars and research centers carrying out research on important social science questions.
He spoke at length on the challenges of conducting foreign policy with limited resources, in the context of forming strategy to deal with simultaneous global threats. To the delight of all present, he also shared leadership lessons gleaned from his experiences in military and political roles.
