What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, analyze,  and manage spatial or geographical data.

GIS at Stanford

The Stanford Geospatial Center, housed in the Branner Earth Sciences Library, is the center for GIS and geospatial training and support for campus.  More information for GIS instruction, consultations, and access to GIS data and software (including Stanford licensed packages such as ArcGIS and CartoDB) can be found at their site.

This lab provides a collaborative environment for research and training on geography in the social sciences.

CESTA

The Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis pursues research which utilize data and information visualization that span a variety of methodologies, disciplines, and departments.

Social Explorer

Social Explorer provides easy access to demographic information about the United States, from 1790 to present.

Policy Map

Policy Map is a web-based mapping service that allows you to easily create custom maps, tables, and charts.  It is a for-fee system and allows access to numerous proprietary data sources.

SimplyAnalytics

SimplyAnalytics is a web-based mapping application that lets users quickly create professional-quality thematic maps and reports using demographic, business, and marketing data. SimplyAnalytics requires you to create a personal workspace before proceeding.
