Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society

Founded in 1998 by Norman H. Nie, Research Professor of Political Science, the Institute is devoted to the pursuit and sponsorship of high-quality empirical social science research about the nature of society and social change. The central mission of SIQSS is to provide social knowledge, develop the empirical social sciences as a primary tool for understanding social reality, and inform the community-at-large concerning policy implications of that knowledge.

Faculty and graduate students working at the Institute seek to fulfill this mission by undertaking socially relevant, theoretically important, and methodologically sound social research that can inform scholars across disciplines and leaders in the public and private sectors.  Most of the Institute's activities are supported by research grants and by gifts from individual and corporate donors.
